About that Problem-Free Switch from AT&T to Verizon IPhones...

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In the run-up to the release of the Verizon iPhone 4 this past February, Toktumi (News - Alert) wrote “How to Maximize Your Verizon iPhone 4 Experience.”

Yes, pretty much everyone considers Verizon’s network stronger network than AT&T’s, as Toktumi said in January, “there are some issues that potential Verizon iPhone (News - Alert) users should be aware of.”

For one, Verizon’s cellular network is based on the CMDA standard, not AT&T’s GSM based network. As far as the end user is concerned, this affects multi-tasking and international accessibility. As Toktumi explains, it’s much easier to find GSM networks overseas. If you’re not a jet-setter that won’t botherok you too much, but the multi-tasking probably will, Toktumi officials say.

Toktumi sells affordable hosted PBX (News - Alert) phone services for small businesses and virtual offices and mobile VoIP product for business users and consumers.

The way they explain it, the issue with Verizon and multi-tasking lies with “the EVDO network that is the backbone of the Verizon CDMA based cell service. The current version of EVDO supports voice or data connections, not both simultaneously.”

Surprise! No more running apps and connecting to the Internet while on a call. As Toktumi warns, “an incoming call will cut off any app you’re using that requires an Internet or data connection.”

But Toktumi officials say Line2 users have an answer to Verizon’s multi-tasking issue: “With Line2’s Tri-mode calling capabilities you can make and receive calls and texts over WiFi (News - Alert) or 3G data networks without interfering with any other app or browser connection.”

About the same time, this past January, TMC’s Anil Sharma wrote that the Line2 mobile communication App has now been made available on Android (News - Alert).

Officials with Toktumi claimed that Line2 becomes the first VoIP app for Android to feature carrier-grade SMS texting combined with feature-rich calling functionality, allowing customers to use one number for both types of communication, Sharma wrote.
