Metro Ethernet Provider FiberLight Gets NIH Contract in Maryland

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Web Editor

It has been a busy 2012 for metro Ethernet provider FiberLight (News - Alert) – and there are still eight months to go! The company has been increasing its presence in state after state, inking deals to provide wireless backhaul in Florida and expanding Ethernet services across Texas. Now FiberLight has signed a new agreement, this time in the great state of Maryland.

Recently, the National Institute of Health was looking for a company to provide metro Ethernet services from its headquarters in Bethesda, Md., to its remote data center. The NIH chose FiberLight to provide end-to-end optical transport services.

For more than a decade, FiberLight has delivered fiber optic network services to carrier, enterprise, government and education customers throughout the Old Line State. The company now boasts more than 600 miles of service from Baltimore to Washington, D.C., and on into central Virginia. For the past five years, FiberLight has been building up its presence in the mid-Atlantic region, and this contract with the NIH represents another important customer gain.

“FiberLight will provide turnkey Ethernet transport services to the National Institute of Health for the delivery of data between the NIH facilities,” said Ben Edmond, president of sales and marketing at FiberLight. “The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency—making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. The architecture of FiberLight’s flagship offering, LightSource Ethernet, will employ MEF (News - Alert) compliant E-Line logical design with no oversubscription at any point on the network ensuring optimal performance, latency and security.”

Earlier in the year, FiberLight signed a deal with Amazon Web Services (News - Alert) to become a Direct Connect Solution Provider. This relationship will allow FiberLight to connect its clients directly with AWS data centers using secure access to the cloud.
