There are ample opportunities available for telecommunication service providers to realize new revenue streams in vertical markets such as healthcare in the Asia Pacific region, according to a new study by Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert).
The countries in the region face large and diverse healthcare issues and service providers that are capable of bringing in new and efficient technology into healthcare along with the capability to work with government initiatives to enhance resource utilization are bound to reap a lot of benefits.
“Communication service providers are opportunistic in that they seek out products and services that are comparatively easier to monetize based on government priorities and reimbursement policies in the region,” said Natasha Gulati, connected health senior analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “Such products and services lay the foundation for sustainable revenues while more innovative pilot projects, such as telehealth networks for rural areas or mHealth-based educational programs, are tactics to underline their presence in healthcare as well as demonstrate the need for technology adoption.”
Frost & Sullivan conducted a global assessment of the opportunities the healthcare sector provides to telecommunication service providers and concluded that even though with visible potential present in this particular sector, most telecommunication service providers have not tapped into it, except for a few. The healthcare industry has integrated many telecom services but only now are sophisticated solutions and services coming to the forefront and starting to generate new revenues.
Frost & Sullivan also points out that it is still a long way to go in terms of realizing a new-age healthcare system.
The research firm also noted the growing trend of telecom companies partnering with major universities to venture into turnkey projects, and said that the ideal strategy is to create a network of partners that includes software vendors, mobile app companies, medical device companies, pharmaceutical participants and hospital chains, among others, that can deliver holistic solutions to consumers in the Asia-Pacific market.
