The term “master agent” is defined as a company that inks carrier contracts and works in conjunction with its sub-agents to help up them ramp up commission while also gaining access to pre-and-post-sales support. When partnering with a master agent like Telarus (News - Alert), independent agents are no longer required to enter into agreements with a large number of carriers and can instead see a higher profit margin by leveraging a robust platform and being able to connect with major companies in the industry with ease.

However, sometimes describing a company as a “master agent” doesn’t do firms in this vertical justice. In fact, "The term master agent has some meanings that would be hard to understand if you were outside our particular niche," Ken Mercer, senior vice president for master agency Telecom Brokerage (News - Alert) Inc. (TBI) commented.

An agent is responsible for continuously growing carrier’s service footprints through helping businesses team with the provider who can best meet their individual needs. Mercer added, "Explaining how we offer many products from many carriers, our prospect can clearly see the advantage of working with a distributor. We are less biased, more experienced and compensated in a way that motivates a long-term relationship."

What Mercer describes is exactly what Telarus does, and when analyzing what makes the master agent so successful, according to Adam Edwards, president and co-founder of Telarus, “It goes from our partner relationships which we are very open with as we try to create a community feel, all the way to our supplier relationships. We don’t view them as an advisory relationship instead we view them as peers which makes us different.”

Another fact that makes the firm stand apart from others in the space – whether they refer to themselves as distributors or master agents – is the fact that Telarus is both a master agent and software company. It was actually launched by its co-founders after they moved on from roles in financial services and engineering, and built the firm from the ground up by investing in software that would increase efficiency and overall customer satisfaction.

“Many like to talk about changing the game. Telarus actually does it. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Telarus team over the last four years as they have grown from the quick specialists to one of the dominant master agent in the industry. Telarus continues to redefine the word ‘master agent’ with their GeoQuote system, back office support and an experienced channel management team,” added Chris Shubert, district dealer manager, Windstream (News - Alert) Communications.
