IPTV equipment sales, service revenue, subscribers, and service provider capex posted strong growth in 2006, and are expected to continue surging through 2010, according to a report from market research firm Infonetics Research,
The report, titled “IPTV (News - Alert) Equipment, Services, Subscribers, and Capex,” showed that global IPTV equipment manufacturer revenue jumped 150% in 2006, surpassing $1 billion.
Although not expected to maintain the torrid pace, the IPTV equipment market is likely to exhibit double or triple growth in most categories through 2010, the firm predicts.
“IPTV subscribers and service revenue continue to grow around the world, as incumbent telcos have joined their upstart competitors in EMEA and Asia Pacific in rolling out high quality IPTV services,” said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst at Infonetics Research. “As is typical with early technologies, the geographic disparities in terms of subscriber uptake will be significant—look no further than France, with its high penetration of IPTV, and Germany, which is just getting underway. The evolving regulatory landscape adds another variable to overall IPTV growth rates.”
According to the study, the number of IPTV subscribers grew 166% in 2006, hitting 7.2 million worldwide. IPTV service provider revenue jumped 178% in 2006 to $2.8 billion worldwide.
EMEA is the leading region for IPTV service revenue, accounting for 49% of the worldwide total in 2006, followed by Asia Pacific with 35%.
The report noted that while global IP set-top box revenue dipped a bit in the fourth quarter of 2006, sales still nearly tripled from 2005 to 2006, rising 195% to $455 million.
Motorola (News - Alert) maintained its worldwide lead in the IP set-top box market in 2006, followed by Amino Communications and Yuxing, the report said.
The report provides top player analysis, current and forecasted market size, and forecasts for IPTV equipment, services revenue, subscribers, and content and transport infrastructure capex. IPTV equipment tracked includes integrated digital headend platforms, video on demand servers, IP video encoders, IPTV middleware (content delivery platforms) and IP set-top boxes.
