Teo Receives Certification for PoE-Enabled Phone: IP Phones Report

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Teo, a telecommunications company formerly known as Tone Commander Systems, has announced that it received TSG-6 certification for two new Power over Ethernet-enabled IP phone models from the National Telephone Security Working Group.

Teo officials say they're the first manufacturer to receive Committee on National Security Systems Class A certification for a PoE-enabled phone. And hey, we'll take their word for it.

Both new models include 802.3af PoE support and a built-in switched Ethernet port, company officials say, "which allows a single network connection to support both a PC and phone." The U.S.-manufactured phones are described by Teo officials as being "industry-standard SIP compliant," and capable of working with virtually all SIP compatible systems, including Cisco (News - Alert), Avaya, Nortel, Asterisk, Shoretel and Broadsoft, as well as others.

'With these certifications," said Steve Hill, president of Teo, "we now have the largest range of TSG-6 approved telephone equipment in the industry.'

These new phones add to Teo's extensive line of TSG-6-certified telephone equipment. In April 2009, the company announced TSG-6 certification for its 7810 TSG-6 IP phone - which was, company officials say, "the first VoIP phone to be approved by the NTSWG and the CNSS."

Other Teo/Tone Commander TSG-6 products include the industry's only certified TSG-6 ISDN phones and TSG-6 NT1 ISDN Network Terminations.
Recently TMC's (News - Alert) Marisa Torrieri reported that IP phone maker Yealink (News - Alert) "is starting to make inroads in the U.S. market with its latest VoIP phones, and one of them - the Yealink SIP-T28P IP phone - caught the attention of TMC CIO Tom Keating (News - Alert), our in-house gadget expert."

The SIP-T28P, a six-line phone sporting a large 320x160 LCD screen, "has full HD voice support (wideband codec, wideband handset, wideband speakerphone)," Torrieri said, adding that it "was reportedly was one of the first IP phones to support the G.722 wideband codec that is now all the rage in the VoIP market.
Tom "Inspector Gadget" Keating was impressed, too: "My first impression of the SIP-T28P was that I liked the large LCD and the sleek ergonomic design which had large easy to press buttons and a useful 4-way arrow navigation keypad. The Web interface was easy enough to navigate. I had no trouble adding the SIP credentials, configuring the NTP server, adding speed dials, and other various configuration options."
