New snom DECT IP Phones Deliver More Functionality
By Michael Guta, Contributing Writer

As IP telephony continues to take over traditional PSTN systems, businesses are looking for hardware capable of delivering legacy and new communications options on the phones they purchase. One of the technologies that brings together smartphone like functionalities along with traditional features is DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications), which use time division multiple access (TDMA) to transmit radio signals. The use of TDMA allows these phones to work effectively in smaller areas with large number of users, making it an ideal platform for organizations with many employees. The new snom M325 Single-Cell DECT (News - Alert) base station and handset is designed to meet this demand with a package that allows the addition of multiple handsets and repeaters to cover different sized facilities.

The DECT platform is a flexible solution which can be used in phones with dual-mode so it can be used with GSM or Global System for Mobile communication. This makes it possible to interact with the GSM standard so users can continue to get signals whether they are indoors or outdoors. DECT has multiple applications for cordless private branch exchange (PBX (News - Alert)), Wireless Local Loop (WLL), cordless terminal mobility and home cordless phones.

The new M325 has a wireless indoor range of 150 feet and 600 feet for outdoor use. If the coverage needs to be extended, three snom M5 DECT repeaters can be added to increase the range of the signal. The platform can add up to 20 additional M25 or M65 handsets with features that include: up to five parallel calls, 75 hours standby and seven hours talk time, and two simultaneous calls.

The repeater can extend the range of the base station for an additional 175 feet indoors with support for single and multi-cell deployments, up to five simultaneous calls, seamless handover of calls between cells, and increased range without adding Ethernet. By bridging the gap between base stations, calls can continue uninterrupted in the covered areas across several floors or throughout large buildings.

“snom’s new mobile DECT solutions allow businesses requiring both fixed and mobile  communications for their office workforce to seamlessly and cost effectively add this capability into their existing phone system,” said Tom Ostrander, snom Director of North American Channel Sales.
