IP communications offers several benefits compared to traditional telephony systems. The service is especially useful in emergency communications. Several emergency service providers now rely on this technology to deliver reliable communications services to those in emergency situations.

Shippensburg Area Emergency Medical Services (SAEMS), a provider of regional EMS services, has recently upgraded its legacy phone systems to ESI (News - Alert)-200 Communications Server. The new IP communications system helps the emergency medical services provider dramatically enhance its fire-life safety and ambulatory personnel’s emergency and non-emergency daily productivity.

The service also helps it reduce monthly telecom expenditure. Access control and video surveillance are added capabilities in the ESI system. Additional features include robust presence management, which allows for presence status, call control, entrance security and documented tracking of users’ work hours and attendance history.

In addition to providing access control and presence management, the IP communications system seamlessly allowed the company to monitor the staff and gave them very granular control over time-of-day and day-of-week access for every authorized individual. This has resulted in significant efficiencies, cost savings and improved staff productivity.

“Shippensburg Area EMS represents the type of progressive company that understands the significant value of a fully integrated IP phone system that can also optionally include access control and presence management,” said ESI president and COO George Platt, in a statement.

“We design our phone systems for forward-thinking small and mid-sized organizations that view their phone system as an integral part of their overall IT and operations infrastructure with higher-level, productivity-enhancing features, and at an affordable price,” Platt added. “The Shippensburg/Vigilant collaborative partnership and facility is an excellent example of that type of thinking, and we are pleased to welcome them to the ESI family.”

The new system is housed in a brand new $7 million, state-of-the art, 37,000-square-foot, LEED-certified facility that is collaboratively shared by SAEMS and the Vigilant Hose Company, the company said.
