Riverbed's Wood: SD-WAN Offers Greater Control

Data centers used to be tangible. If something broke, you were alerted of that with a red light. And you could just walk around to make sure all your gear was displaying green lights. All that’s changed, noted Riverbed (News - Alert) Deputy CTO Brad Wood in his SD-WAN Expo address today.

In today’s world “we can’t feel our apps anymore” he said. And gone are the days of IT people telling employees what apps they can use, he continued. Wood added: “I blame this on Dropbox (News - Alert).”

Of course, that’s just part of the problem. Workers have become accustomed to using their smartphones and whatever apps they want for work. And IT has lost visibility into what apps are being used. That issue is compounded by the cloud and microservices architecture. But visibility is incredibly important, he added. The good news, he continued, is that SD-WAN can provide businesses with visibility and control.

SD-WAN is all about leveraging policy control and orchestration to allow for guaranteed service, he said. Wood talked about a scenario in which an application was running into issues, and said SD-WAN could understand that and automatically changes routes to fix the problem. This approach, he added, is a much better – and faster – one than trying to troubleshoot in a traditional way.

Wood was just one of many companies and speakers represented at SD-WAN Expo. This event, colocated with ITEXPO (News - Alert), is taking place this week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

SD-WAN Expo runs through Friday. Tomorrow’s agenda features speeches by Layne Levine of Windstream, Todd Abbott of Mitel (News - Alert), Jeff Eckard of IBM, Michael Gagnon of TELoIP, Oji Udezue of Atlassian, and many others.
