Nothing makes you feel older than handing something from your youth to a child today and watching them stare at it blankly. In the case of technology, it also underscores how quickly the industry is changing, and how vastly things have improved over older generations.
Take, for example, the telephone, which has evolved over the past century in leaps and bounds. Do you remember using rotary phones? I do, but the kids in this recent YouTube (News - Alert) video certainly do not. While it’s adorably entertaining to watch kids struggle in confusion with the dialing system and guess at what a long distance call could be, “Kids React to Rotary Phones,” posted by Fine Brothers Productions, really makes me appreciate the phones we have today, and the technology surrounding them.
In the past, making a long distance call meant possibly calling collect, or simply accepting the additional fees that your telephone service provider would inevitably tack onto your bill at the end of the month. As one kid in the video suggests, in the modern era there seems to be something inherently wrong with idea of being charged more to speak to someone who lives farther away. With voice over IP (VoIP), people can call just about anywhere in the world for a relatively similar and very low cost. The thought of not having that vast connectivity is hard for kids these days to grasp, and understandably so.
Using the Internet as a vehicle for hosted phone services, people and businesses have been able to open up seemingly infinite lines of communication. And that communication isn’t limited to phone calls: hosted phone systems bundle video and audio conferencing, as well as messaging services, into their packages. In this YouTube video, the kids are asked how they think people sent messages to each other with the rotary phone. The answer is pretty simple… They couldn’t.
The modern phone has revolutionized the way we communicate, and has given us myriad options in how we want to reach out to others, all of which are often available from the same device or platform. Don’t let your company go the way of the rotary phone and fade into obsolescence—adapt to the times with a hosted phone system to keep your business running ahead of the pack. Rotary phones hold a nostalgic place in my heart, but as one girl in the video says, I’ll stick with my iPhone (News - Alert).
