The Hosted Softswitch Designed to Stop Fraud

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The world of communications is an exciting one when you consider all of the innovations put in place to make life easier. We’re now more connected than ever, carrying mini computers in our pockets that can process more information at speeds our first computers couldn’t touch. Landlines no longer have to be the norm and the hosted softswitch is gaining more share.

At the same time, this increased access and computing power makes our communication tools more susceptible to those with less than honorable intentions. The ability to hack into the hosted softswitch means a malicious individual can rack up millions in fees charged to his communication base, with the hosted softswitch provider actually footing the bill.

REVE Systems recognizes this challenge and works to ensure its clients and their customers are protected at all times. Security features are not just an afterthought, but instead a critical element in the design and support of the solution. In fact, only the iTel Switch Plus offers two factor authentication. After entering the username and password for the admin and reseller panel, the individual has to enter a six digit number, randomly generated by the iTel Security Device. Without all of this information, the individual cannot login to the billing portal.

In this scenario, it’s not a big deal if someone knows your password as it will only get them through the first level. iTel Switch Plus also allows the admin to keep the origination client IP as Blacklist and Whitelist. IPs that are set in whitelist are the only ones that the hosted softswitch will actually receive. This added level of protection helps to ensure the high risk and high dollar fraud situations cannot happen.

The platform also enables users to set an expiration time on their password, forcing them to change it every 30 days. If someone tries to login to the admin or reseller admin panel 15 times using the wrong information, the IP is automatically blocked from the network. If someone tries to login to the panel three times using the right username and wrong password, the username is blocked automatically.

Finally, the hosted softswitch also offers Security Alert where the system will email the user if there is an extra recharge in any pin or reseller or call volumes suddenly increase at a very high level, allowing the user to monitor immediately. All of these tools are put in place to prevent fraudulent activity and if a hacker does find a way in, an opportunity to stop him in his tracks.
