The Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group believes that we are witnessing an evolution in the router market. There appears to be a reshaping of network infrastructures due to new bandwidth usage and service delivery scenarios.  As service providers and enterprises rely more on Internet Protocol (IP) networks for their services and operations, equipment manufacturers have found it necessary to develop routers that enable a broader range of services, scale in capacity and more importantly, support for higher data rates. 

The role of routers in service provider and enterprise networks is growing in importance and manufacturers are racing to include innovative hardware and software features into their products.  It is with this in mind that Dell’Oro Group publishes Routers quarterly reports with in-depth market-level and detailed vendor market share information by customer and technology segments. The goal of the Routers report is to track the market for these products.

The report aims to allow component manufacturers, equipment vendors, service providers and financial institutions the opportunities to answer critical business questions, which include the following:

• Which equipment vendors lead the market?
• How are mobile backhaul and residential broadband requirements affecting the demand for service provider routers?
• How do service provider networks handle the rapid growth of Internet traffic?

The latest Dell’Oro Group quarterly Routers report was published last week and according to the figures, on a global level, we can expect to see the Service Provider Router market to pass the $11.5 billion mark in just four years.

Alam Tamboli, senior analyst at Dell'Oro Group made the following remarks, "We expect much of the growth to be driven by continued demand for routers used in mobile backhaul and IP backbone networks. For mobile backhaul, operators in Asia and Europe will continue to invest heavily in their LTE (News - Alert) mobile networks and associated routers as they compete for subscribers. For core routers, operators will evaluate recently introduced platforms that offer much higher capacity than the previous generations. Today, some core router platforms offer ten-fold the capacity per rack versus what was available just five years ago. Operators are expected to upgrade their core router platforms to significantly increase their backbone capacity at a much lower cost per bit transmitted,"
