Business Telecom Spend Balances Lukewarm Consumer Growth, Study Finds

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

The telecommunications market may not grow at a torrid pace the next five years, but particular segments within the market will explode.

This is the finding of a recent study by Insight Research, which just released a report on projected U.S. telecom spending through 2019.

The reported predicted that the total U.S. telecom market would grow by only 2 percent through 2019, climbing from $422 billion this year to $456 billion in 2019. This growth masks an explosion in business telecom spend, however.

Business cell phone purchasing will grow by nearly 16 percent over the forecast period, for instance, while consumer spending on cell phones will decline by more than 16 percent. Business spend on mobile device applications software should expand by roughly 20 percent in the next five years, while consumer spending will grow by only single-digits.

“The very wide disparities in projected spending growth that we found when looking at consumer and business buying trends across more than 19 different telecommunications categories came as quite a shock,” Robert Rosenberg, president of Insight Research, said in a statement.

“Our research left little doubt in our minds that the carriers, their software developers, and their equipment suppliers are going to put ever greater amounts of their development budgets into areas that meet the needs of businesses,” added Rosenberg.

The Insight Research study examined a number of segments within the telecom industry, including cellular data, cellular data cards, cellular routers and gateways; wireline voice, wireline WANs; DSL high-speed Internet connectivity; fiber high-speed Internet connectivity, and cable high-speed Internet connectivity, among others.

For telecom service providers, this is a clear indication of where the growth will be the next few years: Business, business, and more business.

One area that should be particularly hot is voice-over-IP (VoIP), as it can reduce total telecom spend and deliver added functionality for business customers. While both consumers and businesses can take advantage of VoIP, it offers particular advantages for demanding business use.
