Carrier Router/Switch Market Increases in Q2

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Q2 performance in the carrier router and switch market showed that global revenue increased.

Router and switches for service providers worldwide saw revenue jumping 27 percent, to $4 billion during the recent quarter, compared to Q1. Infonetics Research (News - Alert) said the numbers show that, “service providers are ready to spend after holding back in the previous quarter.”

Among carrier router and switches, Cisco remains in first place. Also, Huawei (News - Alert) edged up by 4 market share points, and is in second place.

“The 2nd quarter is usually up for carrier routers and switches, but this one is exceptional given the sluggishness of the past few years,” Michael Howard (News - Alert), principal analyst for carrier networks and co-founder of Infonetics Research, said in a recent statement.

“Every major geographical region except Japan notched double-digit sequential growth and, more important, gained from the year-ago quarter,” Howard added.

One interesting take-away from the report was that in the Asia-Pacific region, carrier router and switch revenue jumped 45 percent from the previous quarter. This was due in large part to Huawei’s and ZTE’s (News - Alert) stellar performance according to Howard. Even more importantly perhaps, the recently laggard Europe/EMEA was able to show nice gains as well.

Recently, Infonetics also reported that during Q2, IP edge (edge routers and carrier Ethernet switches) revenue increased by 30 percent. There was more demand for 100GE routers and 100G optical transport. Core routers increased the slowest comparing the two quarters, Infonetics adds. Four companies – Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), Cisco, Huawei and Juniper – represent some 90 percent of total router revenue during Q2. Huawei over the past two years added the most edge and core router market share points of any vendor, Infonetics said. It increased by 5.6 points.
