New iPhone Said to Offer Videoconferencing; Commercial to Demonstrate iChat

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sam Mendes has a reputation, but it doesn't have anything to do with the iPhone (News - Alert). Such a statement may have been true a few days ago, but times change. Now, according to a TiBp report, the American Beauty director has been selected to create new iPhone HD/iPhone 4G commercials.

In addition, Endgadget insiders have tipped us off that the device - known on the inside as the Mammoth N90 - will have a mother and daughter highlighting its iChat video feature in at least one of the commercials. And, while cameras tend to disappear from final Apple (News - Alert) release products, the front-facing iChat video camera looks promising.

Endgadget noted that the next iPhone is sure to have video conferencing. A screenshot shared on the post demonstrates proof that the conferencing option is coming. Given the guarantee of the iChat video feature, all roads are pointing in the same direction.

A second Endgadget report confirmed that videoconferencing is a sure bet, as well as the iChat demonstration videos. In fact, Twitter posts reveal that there's at least one actress who is up for a role in the Apple commercial in New York and another individual who is auditioning for spots in California. While names have not been shared just yet, this makes the June 7 Apple event even more enticing.

According to a report in The Film Stage, the commercials are most likely to debut as part of Steve Jobs (News - Alert) iPhone announcement at Apple's WWDC event. It has already been confirmed that Gizmodo is present in the iPhone. One of the primary new features to be highlighted in the spots will be the front facing camera and video chat, demonstrated for all to see.

Apple has a reputation for relying on big names to promote their products. The commercial for the debut of the 1984 Apple was directed by Ridley Scott. The company has relied on other big names such as Errol Morris and David Fincher to achieve the right presence and tone.

While the celebrity connection is nice, the true value will come in the quality of the videoconferencing experience. Will it be easy to use and will it meet the need in the business world? If there is an extra charge for it, will people use it? Apple has done so much right already, can they even go wrong?
