The growing volume of data continues to drive the need for capable and cost-effective analytical tools. As a result, driven by technology advances, Hadoop gained significant traction in the marketplace last year. Suitable for a more broad range of organizations and use cases, Hadoop is predicted to establish its dominance in big data analytics with the addition of even more capabilities.
In fact, according to experts, the ecosystem around the open source Hadoop framework will continue to grow in 2013. And one area that will see a burst of development is creating a SQL interface for real-time interactive queries, MapR Technologies CEO and co-founder John Schroeder told Data Informed.
Speaking of SQL, there are at least two different groups working on products to allow developers to connect to Hadoop with SQL. While developers at commercial Hadoop company Cloudera are working on their product Impala, a community of open source developers are working on Apache Drill.
According to Schroeder, because the ability to have interactive data queries is important, MapR Technologies is creating a framework to use SQL is the next step for Hadoop. Schroeder told Murphy that because there is a wealth of SQL programming knowledge already in the marketplace, it will facilitate enterprise adoption of Hadoop.
Apache Drill is an open source Apache incubator project for interactive analysis of large-scale datasets, inspired by Google's (News - Alert) Dremel. It enables users to query terabytes of data in seconds. Apache Drill supports a broad range of data formats, including Protocol Buffers, Avro and JSON, and leverages Hadoop and HBase as data sources.
In this interview, Schroeder highlighted the latest progress on Apache Drill, which MapR is helping to develop, as well as described a major upgrade to the NoSQL data store HBase. The MapR CEO suggested the company was contributing heavily to the development of Apache Drill because it is expanding rapidly. As per this interview, MapR is working to build a sizeable development community around Drill in next 12-18 months.
