FoIP Feature: Fax Industry Officials Report Robust Growth for 2009

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

As e-mail and other technology remain popular for communication today, the fax industry should not go unnoticed.

While many people are questioning the future of the fax industry, FaxCore (News - Alert), a Denver-based fax server application provider, is retaining a positive outlook. TMCnet recently spoke with Max Schroeder (News - Alert), senior vice president of FaxCore, Inc. about the state of the fax industry.

Why does the company have a positive attitude? According to Schroeder, FaxCore is doing very well, which on its own, is a good reason to have a bright outlook. What’s more, FaxCore’s resellers are also offering positive feedback - another key indicator.

Schroeder pointed to some industry statistics from Davidson Consulting, a firm that specializes in market research covering facsimile and unified communications, which support that notion.

In general, the Fax over IP, or FoIP market is expected to show robust growth. Officials at Davidson Consulting said FoIP servers will grow dramatically, while conventional fax servers will decline in sales. The entire fax server industry will grow by 4 percent on a compound annual growth rate, or CAGR. The five-year forecast for boardless versus boarded FoIP servers will be dominated by boardless fax servers, which are expected to have a CAGR of 19.6 percent compared to boarded FoIP servers, which will have a CAGR of only 15.6 percent.

Meanwhile, FoIP servers are expected to grow at a 20.8 percent CAGR as they rise from $76.2 million in 2008 to $155 million in 2012. The FoIP server software category will increase at a 21.1 percent CAGR, while FoIP hardware category will rise at a slightly slower pace at 19.1 CAGR.

The fax industry is still strong and viable with FoIP contributing to its continued growth. Part of the success is attributed to the growth of Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. Going Green UM, VoIP, FoIP, and NGN are all complimentary technologies that give users opportunities to increase efficiency at a lower cost than ever before.
