Will Xbox One Be Your Next Unified Communications Device?

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The news keeps popping up about the next Xbox – it’s set to be the next best thing…in unified communications? We don’t often think of these gaming systems as anything more than a recreational device. But the latest buzz suggests that the Microsoft (News - Alert) Xbox One may also appeal to the business user.

The buzz started when a Microsoft MVP suggested on the Microsoft Small Business blog that the Xbox One should draw in the small business, according to a Computer World report. The post has since been removed by Microsoft but why not explore the possibilities?

One of the key draws to this alternative platform is the built in feature-set that can support video conferencing and networking capabilities. The device offers 1080p HD video conferencing by way of Skype (News - Alert) and cloud-based data access using SkyDrive. The console also supports Wi-Fi direct for streaming to the television and gesture-control capabilities thanks to the Kinect camera.

At just $499 – it’s a multifunction device that fits the small business budget.

But some still argue that its application within the small business environment will be limited. While it is a new spin on the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) phenomenon, and many remote workers in home offices could make use of the device, would the small business go out and purchase the gaming system simply for unified communications?

Richard Absalom, an analyst with Ovum (News - Alert), doesn’t really see the appeal for the small business. After all, the capabilities offered are already available on the PC. The ability to attach to a larger screen may be appealing for some, and others may develop clever uses, but overall mass appeal may be lacking.

The Kinect camera may be the most unique characteristic, but is that enough to drive demand? It could be in specific industries. Ovum suggests niche opportunities for hospitals operating theatres that allow surgeons to navigate records without leaving the theatre to find what they need. Applications may also be possible in research and science.

But without applications geared specifically for the business user, the Xbox One may not have the appeal some are looking for – beyond the break room, of course. And, it still won’t encompass all unified communications capabilities, like a FoIP strategy for the paperless office.

Like any other new technology, there will be users in all categories, including the small business. Without an application development strategy on the backend, however, don’t expect to see the Xbox dominating the small business conference room.
