Mobile backhaul networks are an important part of mobile service providers these days. They increase the capacity of mobile networks and allow mobile operators to increase their service area.

Offering a 40 percent I/O bandwidth increase along with integrated 10Gbps serial interfaces, Broadcom Corporation (News - Alert) has introduced a new high-capacity StrataXGS switch. While the switch is ideal for next generation networks, it also caters to the evolving needs of current day networks and helps them in adapting to the increasing requirements.

The StrataXGS BCM56450 consists of a single switch solution and combines high bandwidth switching with various features such as a hierarchical traffic management, control-plane processor, advanced operation, packet timing recovery and administration and maintenance (OAM) functions.

The new switch enables network operators to ensure the availability of a reliable backhaul network as it provides state of the art OAM functions and hardware-based protection. It also features integrated digital phase-locked loop and 1588 v2 and synchronous Ethernet hardware support along with a carrier Ethernet packet processor.

StrataXGS switches also bring many firsts to the table. For example, they provide wire-speed IPv6 routing, ubiquitous security, and wireless LAN support. It is also equipped with an advanced multi-layer 72 Gigabit per second (Gbps) full-duplex packet processing architecture.

“Given the rise of mobile data traffic, carriers are focused on improving their backhaul strategy to meet end users' evolving needs while offering more services," said Ram Velaga, Broadcom Vice President and General Manager, Core Switch.  "Today's introduction builds on our established StrataXGS leadership and longstanding innovations in carrier Ethernet to equip carriers with a high-performing foundation that supports their rapidly evolving mobile backhaul needs.”

Recently, the company introduced two new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) processors at the Interop (News - Alert) show in Las Vegas. These processors were StrataGX BCM58525 Series and StrataGX BCM58522 Series. Both these products made use of the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processors.
