Sales of Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)-capable adapters and LAN on Motherboard (LOM) have boosted 10 Gbps Ethernet market growth in Q2 2011, according to Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group. This trend has also resulted in changes in the vendor rankings in the 10 Gbps Ethernet market.
Gain in market share ranking for leading vendors in the second quarter of 2011 was correlated with an increase in FCoE business.
“FCoE shipments have been growing at a faster rate than 10 Gbps Ethernet, comprising a higher portion of the total 10 Gbps Controller and Adapter market,” said Sameh Boujelbene, an analyst covering Controllers and Adapters at Dell'Oro Group, in a statement. “Nevertheless, we calculate less than 40 percent of the FCoE-capable controllers and adapters are actually deployed to run FCoE traffic.”
According to the DellOro Group report, Emulex (News - Alert) is leading the 10 Gbps Ethernet market in terms of port shipments. Another leading vendor, QLogic, moved from 4th position to 3rd, while Cisco moved from 5th position to 4th in terms of revenues in Q2 2011 versus Q1 2011.
Recently, Dell'Oro Group announced that the Ethernet Switch market grew 8 percent sequentially in L2-L3 switching. Continued data center deployments are responsible for the sequential growth. These include utilizing 10 Gigabit Ethernet in Top-of-Rack and Blade switches.
The Ethernet Switch market rebounded in Q2 2011 as fixed Ethernet switches reached record levels for both revenue and port shipments during the quarter. 10 Gigabit Ethernet continues to be the main driver of revenue growth in the market as customers continue significant investments in the data center.
