Ethernet Extenders Deliver Strong Quality Network Performance

By Susan J. Campbell

Ethernet has easily become the most common data-network technology in the global market as a result of its low cost, high degree of flexibility and standards-based interfaces. Even with so much going for it, however, Ethernet does have its own challenges.

When trying to leverage optimal performance, Ethernet has one very glaring challenge: the distance limitation set by the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3 specifications of 328 feet or 100 meters. This limitation means that users can’t install equipment where they want or need it, and it eliminates the possibility of employing the technology in network and system designs.

Ethernet also requires CAT5 or better cabling. Users already leveraging high performance with installed cabling often have to implement cost-prohibitive and sometimes challenging processes of rewiring their infrastructure. As a result, it can be difficult to drive this change, even when benefits are certain with the Ethernet implementation.

Organizations can easily overcome these challenges and implement robust and innovative technologies with copper-base Ethernet extenders. These plug-and-play devices allow users to quickly install and take advantage of existing copper twisted-pair infrastructure. The devices also allow users to go beyond the 100 meter limitation to establish long-range, high-speed data communication links between geographically separated LANs or Ethernet enabled devices.

Organizations using advanced solutions can also use copper-based Ethernet Extenders to send packets at full line rate to a peered LAN or Ethernet enabled device up to 5 miles away. As a result, Ethernet extenders can create effective bridged-Ethernet connections across buildings and streets, over a college campus and between Ethernet LANs.

In fact, Ethernet extenders can be the most cost-effective solution for long-reach Ethernet communications as they eliminate the need for complicated and pricey CAT5 or fiber wiring. These extenders help users to avoid the cost of installing additional equipment and eliminate the need for costly repeaters and CAT5 cabling.

Patton (News - Alert) Electronics offers a full range of Ethernet extenders to satisfy the networking needs of any business. With auto-rate adaption, the highest speeds can be delivered across great distances. In addition, the auto-rate adaptation can be set for multiple data rates and will require no difficult configuration when connecting to LANs at different distances.

Patton’s Ethernet Extenders enable the organization to leverage optimal performance, without worrying about connections or quality failures. With the new EnviroNET Ethernet Extender housed in NEMA-compliant, environmentally-sealed and thermally-controlled enclosures, users can further expand their Ethernet boundaries for optimal performance.
