A new report from the folks at Good Technology (News - Alert) highlights the rise of the mobile enterprise app, focusing on a “groundbreaking quarter” for enterprise app activations as businesses look to make employees more “collaborative, productive and engaged.”
In the report, “Good Technology Mobility Index Report,” for Q4 2013, data reveals 54 percent growth in total enterprise application activations quarter over quarter, up from a 43 percent growth rate from Q2 to Q3 of last year.
More specifically, Good Technology iOS devices accounted for 73 percent of total enterprise mobile device activations in Q4 2013.
Once again, Apple (News - Alert) maintains its dominance in the enterprise market. However the report is generated using Good’s internal data, compiled from devices activated across Good’s customer base in Q4 of 2013. Because the report uses only information from its own platform, it would not necessarily reflect the market as a whole.
"We continued to see an increase in iOS activations this quarter," Good's report stated, "which we can attribute to two new iPhone (News - Alert) models coming to market just before the start of the quarter. The overall number of device activations has increased 34 percent from Q1 to Q4 of this year, indicating strong, continued growth and adoption of the Good Secure Mobility Solution.”
Enterprise mobility is changing at a rather rapid rate. That means user mobile demands, such as email and other enterprise applications, are increasing. The consumer space is absolutely saturated, so it’s only a natural step that device manufacturers and app developers make a push toward the enterprise space.
Good’s data seems to omit BlackBerry (News - Alert) which, at one point, was the industry standard for public and private sector enterprise organizations. Its share of the market has eroded significantly in recent years as its smartphones have become increasingly undesirable and its rivals, mostly Apple and Android (News - Alert)-based devices, have caught up in terms of management and security features.
Overall, BYOD is accelerating in which employees are allowed to choose their mobile and wireless devices to use for work purposes. BYOD has many implications to the enterprise with the key issue being security. More than that, though, mobility is a critical asset in business that can not only increase efficiency and productivity but also drive new revenue generation and competitive advantage. It’s only natural that apps are following suit.
