Polaris - Globecomm Partnership Help Wireless Operators Meet FCC E911 Requirements

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

Polaris Wireles has entered into a joint venture with Globecomm Systems (News - Alert) Inc., a global provider of satellite and terrestrial communications infrastructure solutions and services. As a result of this partnership, U.S. wireless operators will now be able to quickly, easily and cost-effectively meet Federal Communications Commission E911 Phase II requirements.

With Globecomm's managed E911 Phase II service leveraging Polaris' proven E911 software solution, mobile-device users can now be rapidly located.

'We are committed to bringing robust and assured capabilities to our customers, and the Polaris location solution is the ideal enabler for our managed E911 Phase II service,' Andrew Silberstein, vice president and general manager, Globecomm Network Services, said.

Silberstein further added that Polaris differentiated Globecomm's offering with superior performance and cost advantages that were equally available to wireless-operator customers across the spectrum of network evolution.

The comprehensive turnkey telecommunications solution provides professional engineering services, managed network services and full life-cycle support to a variety of customers, including wireless operators.

While Polaris software will enable Globecomm's GSM and CDMA hosted service customers to meet FCC (News - Alert) Phase II requirements, Globecomm will manage the E911 Phase II service from its own network, from its center in Hauppauge, N.Y.

This collaboration will provide real-time, highly precise location data to emergency responders when mobile users dial 911.

As the Polaris solution requires no additional hardware to be installed by either its partner or its customers, and as wireless-operators do not have to alter settings in subscribers' handsets, the partnership is likely to be hassle-free and highly successful. The managed services will deliver network coverage across subscriber bases and across 2G and 3G networks as well.

Bhavin Shah, director of marketing and business development, Polaris, considered the partnership a crucial one as it would pave the way for the company's expansion and expose Polaris to the broader set of wireless operators who sought the simple and cost-effective value-added managed services provided by Globecomm. The company provides end-to-end value-added satellite-based communication products, services and solutions by leveraging its core satellite ground segment systems and network capabilities, with its satellite communication services capabilities.

And although Polaris has a track record of accurate location solutions, this partnership with Globecomm is the first real E911 Phase II service based on Polaris' technology. Since 2003, Polaris has been successfully deploying the only software-based, high-accuracy location solution that meets FCC E911 Phase II requirements. Polaris is backed by venture capital funds

In a related news item, Polaris Wireless announced that it won a multi-million dollar international contract to provide an end-to-end high-accuracy location solution, supplying a wide range of location determination and data analysis capabilities.
