University Deploys RedSky E911 Solution

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

RedSky (News - Alert) Technologies just published a case study showcasing how a large University in Northern California is meeting the needs of its students and faculty by implementing an automated Enhanced 911 solution to help ensure the safety of all concerned parties on campus.

Due to the nature of the deployment and several of the vendors involved, the University is not yet willing to share its identity, but suffice it say that it is a large private university in Northern California spanning more than 8,000 acres. On an average day when classes are in session, the University campus welcomes over 17,000 students, faculty and employees. A hospital and associated clinics also call the campus home, and a new medical research center was recently built five miles away.

The E911 deployment called for an automated system that supported multiple IP PBX (News - Alert) platforms, and critical to the challenge, was the fact that the solution needed to support nomadic devices, such as IP phones, which can be plugged into the network in many different locations. The three IP PBX platforms that the solution needed to integrate with were from well-known manufacturers Avaya, Nortel (News - Alert), and Cisco. The University also required the E911 solution to integrate with several other IT systems such as an existing notification system and a telephony workflow solution.

The University chose RedSky’s E911 Manager for its ability to interoperate with the IP PBX platforms. E911 Manager integrates with the campus phone system(s) and automatically captures location changes for all types of phones and regularly updates the appropriate databases.

By utilizing the RedSky solution, The University has met its objective of providing a fully automated E911 system that tracks IP phone location throughout its campus geography, and that integrates with existing work flow and notification applications.

By deploying E911 Manager, the University is also prepared to comply with E911 legislation currently being considered by the California legislature.
