Roxbury to Rename Roads for E911 Purposes

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

Roxbury Pond Village is searching for road names for enhanced 911 purposes. The new names will be submitted to the state by Roxbury's E911 officer Roland Patneaude, according to Terry Karkos from sunjournal.com.

Currently, residents and camp owners on West Shore and East Shore roads in Roxbury Pond village are considering three new names each for their roads and the state will soon decide a new name for each road.

Residents of this village are lucky to have this chance of choosing names for roads as typically municipalities have the right to name all roads.

The names, says Karkos, are being chosen due to similar addresses in nearby Byron, which also has East Shore and West Shore roads at Garland Pond.

The conflicting addresses have caused confusion amongst emergency responders and delivery companies that arrive at wrong towns as they are not sure which place to go to.

Patneaude is also concerned about a No Trespassing sign posted at the intersection of privately-owned West Shore Road and the Main Street.

This may confuse 911 workers and may cause trouble in case of emergencies.

“Well, this may sound kind of dumb to ask, but what happens if a firetruck shows up there?” John Sutton, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, asked fire Chief Ray Carver.

“So, essentially, by putting up a No Trespassing sign on that road, whoever did, there won't be any fire protection on that road?”

Karkos adds that the Fire Department at Roxbury is trying to set up free automated external defibrillator and basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training for Roxbury residents.

Continuous efforts are made to improve 911 services. Recently FCC chairman Julius Genachowski (News - Alert) issued a statement regarding initiatives that ensure consumers have access to reliable phone service, particularly when calling 911, whether they are using a traditional telephone or one that operates by interconnected VoIP service.
