Illinois Public Safety Agency Utilizes Exalt Microwave to Transport 911 Voice and Data Traffic

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Exalt (News - Alert) Communications has announced that its microwave backhaul systems have been deployed by Will County 911 in Bolingbrook, Illinois, to connect its new dispatch center, also known as Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), with a regional switching center approximately 13 miles away. Bolingbrook PSAP dispatches emergency police and fire calls supporting the community's 73,000 residents.

Will County 911 and Bolingbrook PSAP selected Exalt as it provides reliable systems. The public safety agency dispatch center is connected with a remote switching center in Laraway, Will County with the help of Exalt microwave backhaul systems. Four microwave links located on water towers and traditional communications towers have been used for the same. Despite the varying extreme temperatures in Will County, the link has never failed.

In a release, Tom Ross, deputy chief at Bolingbrook Police Department, said, "With 911 voice and data traffic that can involve life-and-death situations, we need a communications system that we can rely on no matter what. The Exalt systems have been totally reliable and give us greater peace of mind and lower costs over time than leased lines."

The links for Bolingbrook PSAP have been deployed by Digital Sky of Homer Glen, Illinois, a partner of Exalt. The Exalt 4.9 GHz and 6 GHz microwave backhaul systems have been configured for Bolingbrook PSAP. Mission critical two-way radio traffic for first responders is transported with two T1 lines carried by the backhaul systems. Interference protection and reliability are provided by the system by using the 4.9 GHz public safety frequency band. The system provides even higher capacity with the 6 GHz frequency band. Additional simulcast trunking sites for Will County's 800 MHz radio system will be supported.

Guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, and constant latency are offered by all Exalt microwave backhaul systems, including all indoor, outdoor, and split-mount systems. Available in world bands from 2 to 43 GHz, the systems have capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel.
