E911 Hosted Solutions Feature: Location Based Services Grow Despite Challenges
By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Location based services are gaining in popularity as individuals throughout the world are using GPS and wireless networks to navigate points of interest, weather information, tracking field force and more. Such applications actually leverage the user’s physical location to provide the desired information.
According to the “Location Based Services Market in America 2008-2012” report, the LBS market in the United States is undergoing a rapid transformation into a strong growth industry, driven by the country’s control and management of the GPS system and E911 legislation.
Enhanced 911, or E911, is location-based technology that enables emergency responders to pinpoint the whereabouts of people in distress. This emerging technology is increasingly critical for organizations of all sizes as decision-makers continue to seek solutions to protect people, while also balancing budgetary needs through the leveraging of existing administrative platforms.
Wireless operators are also now promoting LBS aggressively as they have been forced to install location determination equipments in their networks as a result of E911 legislation. Other drivers in the American market include navigation and family safety solutions. The growing number of application stores and availability of GPS-enabled mobile phones contribute to this industry.
GPS technology has come a long way in the past few years and technological innovations have helped to create more accurate and reliable systems. Positioning systems are now moving towards hybrid location technologies to offer greater accuracy levels. Such solutions combine assisted-GPS with other location positioning technologies to offer more accurate information.
While the growth rate of LBS services is high, there are still certain challenges in this industry, including privacy concerns and an aging GPS infrastructure. These issues will have to be overcome if key players hope to keep the industry in its high growth trajectory over time.
The “Location Based Services Market in America 2008-2012” report forecasts the size of the LBS Market in America for the stated time period. It also examines key market trends, drivers and challenges, while profiling some of the key vendors competing in this market.
