911 ETC Webinar to Highlight Importance of Inputting Emergency Location Info in Soft Phones

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

E911 hosted solutions provider 911 ETC will host a webinar addressing E911 liability concerns for the enterprise with remote workers on Wednesday, May 11, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. PDT.

When a caller dials 911 from a VoIP service, the 911 response system doesn’t determine location based on the computer; instead, it uses the address registered on the caller’s phone service. As illustrated in an April 2011 TIME Magazine article, this can be problematic – and potentially fatal – for callers dialing 911 from out of the country if the soft phone in use fails to update location information.

911 ETC has developed SoftLoc to address this issue, as the application requires soft phone users to provision their current location for the purpose of reaching emergency first responders. Running as a Windows or MAC system-tray application, SoftLoc is prompted once the user launches a configured soft phone application. Once launched, SoftLoc appears above all other applications and signifies the user to provision an emergency location. In just a matter of a few mouse clicks, users can save frequently-used locations to the remote emergency server, as well as save local locations for quick server updates. If the user opts to not set an emergency location, SoftLoc automatically closes.

SoftLoc came to fruition after one of 911 ETC’s Fortune 100 clients raised concerns of users neglecting to input crucial location information into their soft phones.

“With SoftLoc, users are forced to input their location information – the corporation has the ability to disable the phone until this is done,” stated Mike Anderson, national sales manager of 911 ETC. “We had customers concerned about the liability issue soft phones created without any sort of requirement in place to update location information. With SoftLoc, the responsibility of provisioning the phone is put back upon the user and accurate location information is ensured in the event of an emergency.”

911 ETC focuses on the design and build of individual E911 solutions to ensure safety. The company also addresses the mandated E911 statutes throughout the entire United States.
