Data Center Expansion Popular Trend for Colocation Companies

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

Data centers are rapidly expanding particularly as many data center and colocation companies look to establish a global presence.

This year, colocation leader Telehouse America opened its third colocation facility at 85 10th Avenue in Manhattan’s Chelsea district. The carrier neutral data center, which opened on January 24, offers 60,000 square feet of colocation space on one floor with over 4mW of power.

“With this new facility, Telehouse continues global expansion, while meeting the ever-increasing New York demand for secure, well connected, and cost effective colocation facilities with a choice of IT support services.” Noriyuki Kita, executive vice president of Telehouse America, noted in a statement.

A few months later, Telehouse announced the opening of its new data center in Istanbul, Turkey in partnership with local telecommunications/system integrator company Teknotel Telekomünikasyon.

“Opening a Telehouse facility in Istanbul is a superb opportunity for us to extend our range of products and services in the Turkish market,” Alper Selcuk, general manager of Teknotel Telekomünikasyon, said in a statement. “Already we are finding that demand for carrier neutral data center space is building quickly. Senior ICT executives who are making decisions regarding the deployment of their critical infrastructure realize that they now have a wider choice of communication solutions in Istanbul and that they can now house them more strategically and cost-effectively.”

Like Telehouse, colocation provider CyrusOne (News - Alert) has announced its plans to expand the number of data centers it operates and has recently started the process of constructing 92,000 square foot expansion to its Houston data center. The expansion is being built adjacent to the existing Houston center, and will add seven megawatts of power capacity, giving the site a total of 188,000 square feet of space with 15 megawatts of power. The space, which will be finished at the end of the third quarter of 2011, was “designed with customers in the oil and gas industries in mind,” according to company officials.

“We’ve been wildly successful in Houston and need to add inventory to service enterprises in need of high availability colocation space, such as those that are migrating to denser server technologies,” said David Ferdman, CEO of CyrusOne, in a Data Center Knowledge article. “In 2010 we had a significant number of customer installations within the existing 96,000 square foot building, largely driven by the energy sector. With this expansion, we hope to demonstrate our innovation and long-term commitment to providing high quality colocation services.”

CyrusOne decision to establish a greater presence is not new, however, as earlier this year CyrusOne announced plans to open a 10,000 square foot data center in London. CyrusOne has also expanded its Texas operations in Austin and Dallas over the past year.
