Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT (News - Alert)), a major telecom services provider in the region, this week announced the rollout of a new cloud-based enterprise level virtual desktop solution. This solution will leverage the technologies that are used by virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions provider VMWare.
Being called a Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solution, this new cloud based desktop aims to allow enterprise workers to access their desktop applications and data over the Web or through a private network. The solution will allow them to get a full range of functions using any device they choose.
“We’ve seen notable reception of Cloud technology among local enterprises, and we are constantly partnering with key IT leaders, such as VMware, to ensure our PLDT Cloud continues to be relevant and aligned to our market’s strategic thrusts,” Jovy Hernandez, PLDT first vice president and head of PLDT ALPHA Enterprise, said in a recent statement.
PLDT believes the launch of this kind of solution is one that comes in line with the ever growing popularity of BYOD. The days of people being assigned certain devices and computers they could use … and only use those devices is long gone. The exploding world of handheld gadgets has led to companies having to figure out a way to take the best advantage of BYOD policies.
Virtual desktops have become one way in which a growing number of companies are trying to take advantage of this growth. Using a number of different devices to access an employee’s workspace also means that the company knows that someone not being in the office doesn’t mean they can’t work. Along with growing BYOD policies have come a growing number of companies that have blurred the lines between work hours and off hours. If people can work from home or on the road easier, they are likely to do so. This leads to greater productivity over the long run.
