Skype (News - Alert) is one of the most popular applications used for videoconferencing and audio calls. It is widely used for personal and professional calls worldwide because some of its features like screen sharing make it easy to share and collaborate on content.
Screen sharing, as the name implies, is the process by which one user shares his or her screen with others while talking to them. The idea behind this feature is that a pictorial representation is better than word-of-mouth explanation. In other words, when users see a visual image of another person's work, they can understand it better than a mere explanation. Such a tool has become a necessity in today's virtual work environment where workers tend to be spread across different geographical areas.
Besides sharing it with colleagues, screen sharing also makes it possible for users to teach their family members on how to use Skype or any other application. It can also be used to view videos, photos or any other file without sending it through an email. In this sense, Skype has brought families closer than before despite the physical distance.
The best part about this feature is that it is free and easy to use. To share screen, users should navigate to the toolbar present at the bottom of the current call, and look for a blue-colored plus symbol. When users click that button, Skype will prompt for an option to share screens, and users should click that too. This click will start the screen sharing feature.
Users also have the option to share a particular window instead of the entire screen. To share just one window, users should click the down arrow button present on the left side of the screen, and select Share Window from the menu. Lastly, users should select the window they want to share and click on the start button to begin sharing.
This simplicity is the reason for its popularity.
