Comparing and Contrasting Different Types of Web Hosting

  By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

Web hosting is gaining momentum as it allows individuals and organizations to establish an online presence through servers. As it grows, more and more companies are entering this field to offer a variety of hosting services. As a result, today there are so many different types of hosting services available. There are basically four different types: shared hosting, dedicated hosting, virtual private server (VPS) hosting and cloud hosting.

Shared hosting offers many users with data storage facilities on a single server, making it economical. This is probably the most popular and affordable option for bloggers – blogger Aknit Kumar Singla recommends starting with a minimum 500 MB storage and around 10 GB bandwidth.

In dedicated hosting, a site enjoys exclusive access to a single server. This is particularly useful for businesses that need unlimited disk space, high uptime, unlimited bandwidth and reliability. As per the guide, this type of hosting is ideally suited for e-commerce sites that typically get a huge volume of traffic.

Likewise, VPS hosting falls between shared and dedicated hosting services. When you need hosting services that are stronger than shared hosting, you can opt for VPS hosting, which has a server split into multiple “virtual” servers. VPS is basically dedicated to a user’s hosting needs. But, VPS gives you a lot more control than shared hosting.

Cloud hosting, on the other hand, is a comparatively new service that allows you to use resources as services and, therefore, makes you pays for only the services used. Because it makes it very simple to upgrade the server, cloud hosting offers the flexibility and strength of dedicated hosting. Cloud hosting is a glorified shared hosting and is for users who want more redundancy, better uptime, better load balancing and perhaps access to resources, like hosting your blog on one Web server, storing data on separate database servers and so on.

Choosing the right Web hosting service for your business requires some understanding of your hosting requirements. It is a good idea to check online reviews about different types of Web hosting services before making a selection.
