By the end of the year, Verizon Wireless (News - Alert) is planning to hire 90 more customer service employees at the company's existing call center in Bangor, Maine, bringing the total employee count to around 300. These new hires are being sought due to the rising use of Verizon's networks to deliver data to smartphones and tablets according to Verizon spokesman Michael Murphy (News - Alert), who confirmed that, “We did a lot of renovations to the building and put ourselves in a good position for this type of growth.”
As reported by local Bangor Daily News, this expansion to the 6 Telecom Drive location in Bangor has been planned over the past few years by Verizon Wireless. Despite the recent news that L.L. Bean was planning on shutting down its own call center in Bangor by the end of 2016, Verizon is still banking on the success of this call center. A job fair held recently will hopefully attract many of the new call center agents, perhaps even netting some from the L.L. Bean closure.
Openings at the Bangor call center list an annual salary of around $27,000. This is somewhat above the average $25,239 salaries of call centers in the country from last year, and considering the fact that call center pay in the country has been on the decline, it is expected to attract quality local employees to the call center. Applicants can pre-apply online through a web portal at verizon.com/jobs if they wish to qualify for an interview directly at the job fair.
According to Michael Murphy, these jobs represent a net gain in the overall employment figures of Verizon Wireless. While Verizon had lost several call centers in February in locations like Connecticut, Pennsylvania and California, it appears that the company is starting to bounce back up in better locations.
