8x8 Assigned Two New Patents for Communication Technology Innovations

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

With technological advancements defining new waves of innovation in the information and communications technology (ICT) sphere, patents have been playing an increasingly important role in the economic performance of the companies. In light of this, renowned hosted IP telephony provider, 8x8 (News - Alert), has always sought to protect its innovations and intellectual assets through the securing of patents.

Since its establishment in 1987, 8x8 has been awarded 85 United States patents covering a variety of voice and video communications, signaling, processing and storage technologies. In this fashion, the company continues its tradition by securing two new patents this week.

According to a news statement on October 30, 2012, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued U.S. Patent numbers 8,300,552, entitled "Network Interface Unit Control System and Method Therefor" and 8,300,634, entitled "Mobile Device Communications Routing."

Efficiency of external data service depends on its ease of use and the user-friendliness of the user interfaces. 8x8’s "Network Interface Unit Control System and Method Therefor" patent relates to an arrangement for processing external services data including an audio, video and data signal bussing arrangement adapted to distribute audio, video and data to designated points in a user facility.

The "Mobile Device Communications Routing" patent relates to a variety of methods, systems, devices and arrangements for communications using a mobile communications device, the company elaborated.

The patented technology can further help route calls specifying an endpoint device from a mobile communications device to the endpoint device by using a call forwarding/routing service provider that establishes a connection with the endpoint device. The established connection may include, for example, a Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) connection. In some implementations of the invention, an authentication server is contacted to authenticate the call to be made via the call forwarding/routing service provider.

8x8's chairman and CEO, Bryan Martin (News - Alert), has been named as the inventor of both of the newly issued patents.

Earlier this week, 8x8 Inc. also reported that net income for its second quarter ended September 30, 2012 was $1.74 million, or $0.02 per diluted share, compared to $832,000, or $0.01 per diluted share, for the same quarter ended September 30, 2011.
