For quite some time now, the industry has been abuzz with talk about the many benefits of switching to cloud and hosted offerings over on-premises. While the cost savings and time saved are bright spots, the industry has also been plagued by reports that the cloud isn’t a safe place to be. Fear over being hacked or having sensitive data compromised has created a giant problem for enterprises as they look for better options. But how much more safe is all of this important data when it’s not in the cloud? That’s the question being posed by the latest research from Cloud Industry Forum (CIF).

The research looked at cloud services in the U.K. and polled 250 senior IT and business decision-makers about the reality of what they had experienced with it came to security of their data. What they found was that only 2 percent of cloud users actually experienced a data breach. With this reality, it’s important for users to start to lose some of the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) that’s taken form around the topic of cloud security in the enterprise.

As we continue to see headlines in the media about security breaches like PRISM, more and more organizations are developing a fear about moving at least some of their services to the cloud. Seventy-five percent of the poll respondents reportedly said security fears were the number one reason they still hadn’t fully moved to the cloud.

Another 44 percent of respondents even said they changed how they were using the cloud after PRISM revelations – some even going as far as totally changing their content security policies

While those businesses that are larger and regulated are using a hybrid model, the reality that the cloud, done right, is almost even safer than on-premises, is one that many still need to realize.

TMC’s (News - Alert) Peter Bernstein took a closer look at security issues in the enterprise recently. Based on a study from SafeNet and commissioned by the Ponemon Institute (News - Alert), he noted that a major problem was companies lacking accountability for secure data in the cloud. IT departments need to be at the center of creating more secure conditions for company data in the cloud and develop a plan for storing and using the cloud.

Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute was quoted as saying, “To create a more secure cloud environment, organizations can begin with simple steps such as including IT security in establishing security policies and procedures; increasing visibility into the use of cloud applications, platforms, and infrastructure; and protecting data with encryption and stronger access controls, such as multi-factor authentication.”
