Tips for the Office Workout

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

If you haven’t already heard, the office sit-down has the potential to cause irreversible health effects like carpel tunnel, eye strains, neck and back pain. Even though many companies encourage their employees to exercise and join a gym, sometimes even offering a percentage off memberships, it seems that a simple workout will not cancel out the effects of the sit down disease. Those seven hours spent sitting in one position, without any real movement or circulation, puts workers at risk for decreased metabolism, a contributing factor to the highest cause of death in the U.S., heart attacks, which is why this is often referred to as the sit down disease.

It may sound odd at first, but it is possible for an employee to exercise, without even leaving their desk. Take a look at the list below for some innovative office workouts:

  • The Sit-to-Stand workstation offers employees with three different sitting and standing positions. Adding simple parts to an office like a shift adjustable chair, back cushions, adjustable keyboards and workface areas, as well as foot rests, can benefit an employee’s health over a long period of time.
  • The Ergo Depot offers the Treadmill Desk, a treadmill machine with a desk attached to the top, where one can walk on the treadmill for up to 10 hours a day while simultaneously operating his or her laptop and going about daily office activities as usual. There is also a Standing Desk Bike, which workers can adjust to the height of their regular desks and ride the bicycle throughout the day for daily activity.
  • The Saddle Chair, which forces a more open angle of sitting to prevent users from having an irregular posture, allows more freedom for movement and reduces strain on the muscles of the back, shoulders and neck. It also increases circulation, which creations more energy for the body.
  • Reposition every hour or so. Workers should take a few minutes to stretch their fingers, feet and take a few seconds to stand up and shake their bodies out. Oftentimes when users are typing on the computer or making phone calls all day, they lose track of time and end up sitting in the same position for hours on end.

Although the exercise chairs are extreme examples, it is important for workers to be mindful of their posture and any aches and pains they may feel throughout the day, which need attention. All it takes is a few minutes out of every hour to give your overall heath a chance to battle against the threats of the sit-down.
