Robocalling is an issue not to be taken lightly, especially if a third-party is involved. The mission is to eliminate the need for humans while allowing automated phone calls and SMS messages to be sent to clients. There is an understanding this will not be abused but according to TRAI, it needs to restart an investigation on unwanted and unauthorized calls as well as messages.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) discovered that previously recorded, automated robocalls were being made via computers and telemarketers. Silent calls were made to get the recipients to call the numbers back only to get promotional offers or informational messages. The last consultation regarding call nuisances occurred in 2012 but call center agents are not abiding by rules set forth by the UCC.

According to TRAI: “From complaints being received on regular basis and feedback from various sources, it is evident that problem of Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) is far from being under control. Unscrupulous elements are able to manage new connections and continue to indulge in these activities. Therefore, there is a need to devise a mechanism which is more effective in dealing with these issues.”

Ultimately, the problem is companies that have employed the agents cannot keep track of the ones sending the unwarranted messages and calls. This is where the crackdown is going to start and new regulations should be put in place presumably by the end of 2017, beginning of 2018.
