There are many benefits of adopting a bring your own device (BYOD) policy, and the trend is rapidly expanding. But, there are also many pitfalls and hidden costs involved with BYOD that do not get much publicity. A recent infographic from mobile management vendor Visage Mobile sheds some light on the hidden issues and expenses involved with employee mobility.
Visage collected data from 180 companies between January and April 2013. The resulting infographic pinpoints the hidden costs and potential pitfalls of bring your own device, which can help companies make the right decision when embracing employee mobility.
The infographic, in fact, shows all the hidden costs that a company will incur by adopting a BYOD policy. For instance, 15 percent of a worker’s business phone bill goes to non-business-related expenses, such as unapproved apps, premium text services and ring tones. High roaming charges and downloads of sexting apps are also identified among the various hidden costs that companies have to pay for.

In addition to increased spending for data security, IT support, wireless infrastructure upgrade, mobile device management implementation and device disposal, BYOD also brings in an onslaught of financial consequences, said Visage. For instance, the study shows that 10 percent of all corporate downloads are premium text services like celebrity news alerts and horoscopes, while 25 percent consist of navigation apps. One percent of corporate downloads include hookup and sexting apps, the likes of Mobile Love, Misty Mobile Alerts, and SexyCougars, stated Visage.
Over and above, the company also must pay for mobile employee’s roaming bill. Visage estimates that every month, one in 50 enterprises can get a roaming bill worth $15,000. Similarly, each month, employees download $13,640 worth of unapproved apps, premium services and ringtones.
Lastly, for an average of 738 employees with 1.54 devices each, Visage calculated that the monthly wireless spending of a mobile enterprise is about $90,936, which amounts to a monthly cost of $123.16 per mobile employee.
To make sure employees are not taking advantage of a corporate mobile policy or accidentally racking up hidden costs like these, a mobile device management solution helps manage BYOD workplaces.
