Truecaller Will be in Future BLU Devices

By Michael Guta, Contributing Writer

Our phone number is one of the most identifying pieces of information about us, and in many cases it ends up with people or organizations we want nothing to do with. And as mobile telephony becomes the preferred way of communicating, it means the people in possession of our numbers have access and they can call us at any time. This has led some manufacturers to integrate dialers that provide multiple options for calling and identifying callers. BLU Products, a mobile manufacturer is the latest to do so by making Truecaller, a next generation dialer, available in its phone.

BLU Product builds smartphones at price points that are much lower than the brand names in the market place. Since it was established in 2009, it has sold its phones in 40 countries in the Americas. The company's decision to make Truecaller part of its system will allow its customers more control of the information that is connected with their number.

Because the vast majority of us don't even know who has our phone number, it is possible to get calls any time of day. By moderating who can get in touch with you and how, you can dictate access to your number.

In most instances these calls come from marketers of all sorts, including unregistered pre-paid phone numbers, legitimate companies and phone scammers.

Truecaller protects your mobile presence by helping you identify incoming calls from people you don't know, blocking calls you don’t want to receive and making contact suggestions based on time and place. This means you can see who is calling you even if you don't have their number in your contact list, while at the same time being able to search for any number globally to see the rightful owner.

If you want to know who just called you, all you have to do is copy the number and paste it in the website or app, and Truecaller will notify you when it finds who the number belongs to. The app also has social media integration for Twitter and Yelp (News - Alert).

The problem of unwanted calls was highlighted by a survey Harris Poll conducted in 2015, which looked at the amount of money Americans lost through phone scams in the past 12 months, and the actions they took thereafter.

First of all the survey revealed spam calls cost Americans $7.4 billion in 2015, and around 27 million Americans reported losing money to phone scams during the same year, a 53 percent increase from 2014.

This prompted a range of actions, including signing up for the National Do Not Call Registry, changing phone numbers, canceling credit cards or changed account numbers, report to authorities and more. Some even used reverse look-up to identify the caller and downloaded spam blockers and caller ID apps. So the problem is very real and costly.

BLU Products will provide Truecaller in more than 15 million devices this year alone. If you want to download the app, you can get it from the Google (News - Alert) Play Store.
