GL Communications Provides Diverse Testing Solutions to Improve Voice Quality

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Echo cancellation is used to improve call quality, which in turn can vastly improve the quality of data collected from 3rd party remote call monitoring solutions. One company, GL Communications (News - Alert), provides many testing solutions for echo cancellers (EC) and acoustic echo cancellers (AEC), in order to help companies keep their voice quality in good running order.

To understand echoes, it is important to remember that there are different types. One is caused by delay as voice signals make their way across a network. A second type is electrically generated and relates to the Public Switched Telephone Network.

Also, when it comes to voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), there is round-trip latency, which relates to the time a voice packet needs to reach its destination, and return to the speaker. The speaker thus hears his/her own voice. And when it comes to packet loss, an echo canceller may remove something that is not an echo.

To help work these issues out, GL Communications provides EC and AEC, and they can work in any network setting – VoIP, wireless, or time-division multiplexing (TDM).

In a recent statement, GL Communications explains that echo can be heard on diverse technology. These include two-wire plain old telephone service, mobile phones, VoIP calls, and speaker-phones. There is possible echo from diverse locations, as well – and it certainly can be annoying to those forced to listen to it.

Specifically, GL Communications provides compliance testing per the G.168 standard. That is a recommendation first approved in 2012, and still remains in place.

The G.168 offers manual testing, too. GL's Manual Test Suite provides “the ultimate flexibility for almost any type of network environment and configuration. Tools are provided for thorough G.168 compliance testing including hybrid simulation, application of stimulus, capture of response, and graphical analysis of response,” according to the company’s statement.

There is also automated testing with a full G.168 compliance Test Suite. In fact, it can take place by just by pressing a button. It can run “thousands of test cases for all possible variations of echo path loss, delay, hybrid filters,” the company adds.

Overall, GL Communications provides analysis, simulation products, testing and consulting services for the communications sector.
