RadiSys launches ATCA Single Board Computer for the 4G Market

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

Advanced embedded solutions provider RadiSys (News - Alert) Corporation today released its Promentum ATCA-4500, designed as a new AdvancedTCA (ATCA) single board computer (SBC) utilizing the new Intel Xeon processor 5500 series.

This is the first ATCA single board computer for the 4G market.

The ATCA-4500 is geared for telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) and was designed on the Intel (News - Alert) Xeon 5500 processor in a move to peak performance, topping the previous generation 5400 series by 25 percent, according to the company.

In fact, according to the company, the 4500 outpaces most offerings in the marketplace by a factor of two to three times.

“We bring true innovation and system level thinking to every product we design and the Promentum ATCA-4500 encapsulates the best in single board computers,” said Anthony Ambrose, RadiSys vice president and general manager of Communications Networks.

While expanding this capacity and adding memory has created a certain flexibility to address advanced control, gateway and telecom server functions for a broad set of 4G applications also includes Long-Term Evolution (LTE), WiMAX, Network Management Systems, and IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert).

“As the market leader in Integrated ATCA System deployments, the ATCA-4500 complements our other market leading products using DSP, packet processing and switching technology in building the world’s best 10G ATCA platform,” said Ambrose.

Ambrose says the ability to double the number of transaction or subscriber units that Telecom Service Providers can handle per ATCA slot reduces cost per unit.

The ATCA-4500 is a seventh-generation RadiSys ATCA blade technology and is optimized to meet TEM requirements for integrating into an existing ATCA chassis and for supporting multiple storage options and OS virtualization. It also features a virtualization solution that allows TEMs to streamline the complexities of their network element configurations.

The ATCA-4500 is based on single socket design technology that provides TEMs with higher performance while being packaged that is fully upgradeable for next generation performance, at the same time safeguarding investments in hardware by avoiding redesigns.

As TMCnet recently reported, the emergence of commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware platforms, Carrier Grade Linux and management middleware has had a significant impact on the market for next generation network equipment.

Through enabling Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) to readily assemble best of breed COTS components, the ability to “jumpstart” the development of new Network Elements is initiated. And with an ever expanding COTS ecosystem delivering components from multiple vendors that are considered highly specialized in each area, there remains the challenge in efficiently integrating this complex mix of technologies while still achieving the high reliability required by all major operations.

“TEMs must increasingly look to COTS and ATCA to provide the processing capacity to keep up with increasing network and application complexity,” said Lee Doyle, vice president and general manager of Network Infrastructure at IDC (News - Alert). “The ATCA-4500 is a cost effective solution to allow TEMs to increase the subscriber density per system.”
