NEI Advises Software Developers on the Benefits of Intel's New Xeon Processor 5500 Series

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

For the first time in 15 years, Intel Corporation has introduced 17 new enterprise-class processors that not only speed up data center transactions but also improve energy usage. Among those, the company boasts the Intel (News - Alert) Xeon Processor 5500 series “represents a new era in computing” with new levels of intelligence and versatility and the ability for customers to tap new cloud computing, high performance computing and embedded systems markets.

“The Xeon processor 5500 series microarchitecture marks a real shift in computing power and performance that will change the way ISVs and OEMs think about their applications and how they are architected,” said Jeff Hudgins, vice president of marketing, at NEI, a provider of provider of application platforms, appliances and services.

Today, the company offered its advice to help ISVs, OEMs and service providers reap the benefits of the new processor and is offering a free TMC (News - Alert) Webinar on April 8, 2009 at 3:00pm ET together with Intel and Emerson. The Webinar will highlight the basics of Intel’s Nehalem eight-core microarchitecture and planning a conversion strategy.

“By taking some time to prepare, ISVs will be well positioned to bring new and exciting applications to market that can take full advantage of the performance and scope that Xeon 5500 series has to offer,” said Hudgins.

Before moving off of proprietary or highly customized boards, NEI notes that application developers should understand the requirements to deploy high-performance applications on COTS-based platforms that incorporate the Xeon 5500 series and evaluate the timing and engineering requirements of a transition.

Also, adopting the new offering will make it possible to deliver more applications virtually, but iSVs should carefully check if the processor will be successful for their needs. Developers of timing-sensitive apps are also advised to ensure timing is tuned to handle the Xenon processor 5500 series to avoid throwing off timing or race conditions. Finally, NEI is also recommending that developers ensure support and compatibility for the Xeon processor 5500 series and their current kernel.
