A smooth transition for company customers is a top priority after UNICOM (News - Alert) acquired solidDB from IBM in a recent deal.
UNICOM Systems acquired solidDB for an undisclosed amount, and it will provide the company an in-memory relational database management system. The deal includes both the solidDB Universal Cache feature and the solidDB software.
Under the transaction, some transition services will be given by IBM (News - Alert) to “allow for a smooth and seamless transition for all of the solidDB customers worldwide,” the company said in a statement.
The deal is the second acquisition in six months between the two companies. Earlier, UNICOM acquired the Cognos (News - Alert) Application Development Tools suite from IBM. In addition, UNICOM Global is an IBM Premier Partner, IBM Reseller and ISV, and the two companies have been working together for 33 years.
"We appreciate IBM's confidence in our ability to effectuate such a complex global transaction, and will once again collaborate with IBM to ensure a smooth transition for our customers," Corry Hong, the president and CEO of UNICOM Global, said in the statement.
He points out that solidDB is found in more than three million deployments in telecom networks, enterprise applications and embedded software and systems. “UNICOM will focus on extending these customer investments through enhanced support and development efforts," Hong added.
UNICOM will also open a new lab, dedicated to research and development, in Helsinki, Finland, for the core development team for solidDB. They will become UNICOM employees.
The solidDB In-memory database is used by Cisco (News - Alert), HP, Alcatel and Nokia Siemens. The solidDB Universal Cache feature provides in-memory caching software. It can speed up IBM DB2 and Informix, Oracle, Microsoft (News - Alert) SQL Server, and Sybase performance by as much as 10 times.
UNICOM Global is made up of 35 units, and has acquired mid-cap publically traded companies in technology, financing, IT, real estate and business services. The latest deal involving solidDB builds on UNICOM’s IT offerings. As a result, the company’s customers, tech partners and supply-chain partners stand to benefit.
The announcement of the new deal follows UNICOM Engineering, a provider of application platforms, deployment solutions and lifecycle support services for software tech developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEM), being named a Microsoft Gold OEM partner at its Plano, Texas, and Canton, Mass., locations, and as a Microsoft Silver OEM partner at its Galway, Ireland, location.
