Application Performance Management Bridging the Gaps

By Jaclyn Allard, TMCnet Web Editor

There is more pressure than ever on CIOs and IT execs to cut costs, while simultaneously improving service quality, managing risk, etc. As IT tries to develop, deploy and manage new applications, gaps between development and operations become apparent: separate and diverse team members; multiple outlooks and ideas from multiple vendors; silos of information; and disconnected workflow. The results of these gaps are as follows:

  • Takes longer to deploy applications and services, which impacts time to market and a company’s competitive edge
  • Creates slow problem identification, isolation and resolution, which impacts service quality, productivity and customer satisfaction
  • Exposes the business to unwarranted risk and potential revenue loss
  • Drives unnecessary labor and operational expenses

Therefore, the gap must be bridged between development and operations, using end-to-end application performance management. End-to-end application performance management is the monitoring and management of an application’s quality and performance throughout its entire life cycle from development to testing to production to support. This was a topic Joe Toomey, development lead for Rational Performance Tester, touched on in his co-presented session, “D1515: End-to-End Quality and Performance Management,” at IBM (News - Alert) Pulse2011, a premier service management event sponsored by IBM, and held Feb. 27 to March 2.

Such a topic hit close to home for Pulse2011 attendee, Visual Network Systems, a provider of application performance management solutions. Visual Network Systems believes in an end-to-end application performance management solution, providing unique insight into data from the network and the application performance, and ultimately allowing visibility into user and customer experience. It then takes this information and pushes it into IT management systems.

The value of Visual Performance Manager, Visual Network Systems’ flagship application performance management solution, is that it bridges the gap between business goals and customer experience by aligning disparate IT support groups with a line of business owners.

Your networks should be a land of bridges, rather than a land of gaps. Application performance management can help in such construction.
