6WIND, a developer of software-defined networking solutions, announced that its 6WINDGate software now features support for the Intel (News - Alert) Xeon processor platform for large-scale communications infrastructure systems, formerly known as “Highland Forest.”
The company explained that its 6WINDGate software is a drop-in replacement for standard operating system networking stacks. It typically provides up to 10x the packet processing performance of a standard networking stack, significantly improving the price-performance and power-performance ratios of networking equipment.
With support for Intel QuickAssist technology, which provides hardware acceleration for encryption and compression, the 6WINDGate can ensure optimal performance of networking applications such as the WAN optimization, VPN appliances, firewalls and Unified Threat Management (UTM) systems.
The software has now been tweaked to make use of the security features built into the Intel 8925, 8950, and 8955 chipsets, increasing the performance of applications running on the Intel Xeon E5-2400 v2 and E5-2600 v2 processors.
Eric Carmès, chief executive officer at 6WIND, commented, “Network security OEMs have achieved significant cost-performance improvements through the adoption of 6WINDGate, which solves critical performance challenges for both physical and virtual appliances. 6WINDGate is already deployed in tens of commercial LTE (News - Alert) networks throughout Asia, Europe and North America, while also being used by multiple tier-1 suppliers of enterprise and cloud networking equipment. Our engineers have worked closely with Intel to ensure that 6WINDGate is optimized to deliver best-in-class packet processing performance on the Intel Xeon Processor (News - Alert) Platform for Large-Scale Communications Infrastructure Systems, for both physical and virtual implementations.”
Intel noted that commercial software availability and support for the Intel Xeon platform will serve to ensure that customers are able to deploy telecom, enterprise and cloud infrastructure solutions much more efficiently.
“Solutions such as 6WINDGate that support both physical and virtual infrastructure are needed to support the increase in traffic volume and security threats,” said Frank Schapfel, product line manager at Intel
