Advanced Carrier Services Report: Celtro Relies on Metaswitch for Mobile Backhaul Needs

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Recently, a company called Celtro announced that it picked Metaswitch Networks for its mobile backhaul needs.

Multi Protocol Label Switching is pretty important, actually, as it’s one of the central elements of next-generation networks. It provides an IP-compatible, Quality of Service-capable infrastructure enabling the convergence of voice, IP, ATM, Ethernet and Frame Relay onto the same backbone network.

And Metaswitch has been one of the important players in the development of MPLS control plane software for about the past five years, taking an important role in driving the optical standards, particularly.

This is probably one reason Celtro picked Metaswitch’s MPLS and IP Routing network protocol software products for Celtro’s DynaMate product family. Metaswitch’s MPLS software, DC-MPLS, is a portable MPLS source code tool designed for the most demanding applications.

And DC-MPLS provides the MPLS label distribution protocols RSVP and LDP, is fully IPv6 compliant, and includes extensions for optical transport networks and VPNs.

Now, DC-MPLS was developed in close cooperation with equipment manufacturers, and was designed to give support for their carrier-class requirements, including highly available architectures, hot software upgrades, distribution of components onto separate cards and large scale applications -- which means no hard-coded limits.

DC-MPLS is in fact pretty widely deployed, and used by many of the major equipment manufacturers since it interoperates with all major implementations, including Cisco (News - Alert) and Juniper, and is regularly tested at public and private interop events.

“Our mobile operators customers are looking for maximum flexibility in their backhaul networks” said Shahar Gorodeisky, Celtro’s CTO. “As they migrate from ATM to IP/MPLS, they want the ability to run all those technologies in parallel, with the same SLA, and the same features. It allows these operators to use Celtro’s technologies such as virtual bonding, HSPA services classification, and traffic optimization but over an MPLS transport network. Metaswitch’s MPLS network protocol software helps us to achieve this goal.”

“Mobile backhaul is a major application for our network protocol software,” said Clive Partridge, general manager of Metaswitch’s Network Protocols Division. “So we are very happy to be working with Celtro to help them support standards-based, interoperable MPLS and IP Routing on their very successful mobile backhaul switches.”
