Armed with New Name, Metaswitch Networks Reports Growth, Profitability and Market Share Gains

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Metaswitch Networks, a global manufacturer of carrier systems and communications software products with headquarters in Enfield, U.K., this week reported 4.2 percent in revenue growth as part of its annual results for the 2008/2009 financial year ending Aug. 31.

Specifically, revenue for the company, which also has offices in Reston, Va., and Alameda, Calif., grew to $113.7 million, with operating margins sustained above 20 percent.
The results come as the company, formerly known as MetaSwitch (News - Alert) under parent Data Connection, announced this week that it has changed its name to reflect the consolidation of both its “Carrier Systems” and “Network Protocol” divisions under a single new corporate brand: Metaswitch Networks.
Over the last year, Metaswitch Networks said its Carrier Systems Division business was primarily driven by tier one incumbent operators and major regional competitive providers, as smaller operators’ spending slowed amid uncertainty about market conditions and the timing of federal broadband stimulus funds.

Today – with the addition of recent customer wins -- eight of the top 10 incumbent operators in North America now rely on Metaswitch for carrier VoIP infrastructure, the company reported.

The company’s “Network Protocols Division” -- previously known as “Data Connection Limited (News - Alert)” but now incorporated under the company’s main Metaswitch brand -- also saw impressive results, according to Metaswitch executives.

“We are extremely pleased with these results, especially in the light of market conditions which have seen carrier VoIP spending down by more than 30 percent according to industry analysts,” said John Lazar (News - Alert), Metaswitch CEO, in a press statement. “Continued profitability sustains our substantial investment in R&D across both Carrier Systems and Network Protocols Divisions. This has enabled us to carefully grow headcount over the year, and widen the gap between our products and services and those of our competitors who have been forced to make deep cuts.”

Going into 2010, Lazar told TMCnet some of the key trends he’s seeing include an increased focus on applications for mobile broadband and smart mobile devices.

Additionally, said Lazar, there will be a growing demand for the delivery of applications that can work seamlessly across all devices and the continued migration to IP in the core of voice network, driven by the need for enhanced applications and cost reduction.

“We offer exactly these applications, IP infrastructure and brandable experience, and migration to IMS as the blueprint for application delivery,” Lazar told TMCnet. “Metaswitch offers IMS-compliant solutions that are both standalone, and component pieces of multi-vendor solutions.”
