The Softswitch Dilemma at ITEXPO 2025: Key Insights from Industry Experts

By Greg Tavarez February 10, 2025

What are Metaswitch and BroadSoft (News - Alert)?

For starters, they were two providers of VoIP and unified communications solutions that primarily served telecom carriers and service providers.

Metaswitch specialized in cloud-native, software-based networking solutions. Its products included session border controllers, voice application servers and cloud communication platforms that enabled telecom operators to modernize their infrastructure and transition to cloud-based voice and messaging services. Metaswitch was well known for its scalable, high-performance solutions that supported both legacy and next-generation networks.

BroadSoft was a major provider of cloud-based UC and collaboration solutions. One of its products, BroadWorks, allowed service providers to offer hosted PBX (News - Alert), SIP trunking and other UC services to businesses. BroadSoft played a massive role in advancing cloud-based business communications; integrating voice, video, messaging; and collaboration tools into a single platform. With its acquisition, Cisco (News - Alert) strengthened its position in the cloud communication market, integrating BroadSoft's technology into its Webex and enterprise collaboration solutions.

The long-story-short here is that Metaswitch and BroadSoft were instrumental in shaping modern cloud communications and VoIP technologies.

However, with the end of life of Metaswitch and the slow death spiral of Broadsoft, service providers are left wondering what to do about a voice softswitch. At a time when voice revenues aren’t valued versus broadband revenue, what is an ISP to do?

That question can be answered during an ITEXPO 2025 panel session titled “The Softswitch Dilemma,” taking place from 12:00-12:45 PM on Wednesday, February 12.

This session will be led by Mark Lindsey, vice president, ECG; Peter Radizeski, president, RAD-INFO (News - Alert) Inc.

The session, backed by experience from having helped more than 60 service providers select a softswitch and launch voice services, will look at the total cost of ownership of these legacy platforms and what questions need to be asked to craft a voice strategy going forward.

Also, while at ITEXPO 2025, taking place February 11-13 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, be sure to explore the robust exhibit hall for a chance to build connections and learn about various products.
