Sylva Project Paves the Way for the Future of Telecom

By Stefania Viscusi December 13, 2024

The Sylva Project, hosted by Linux Foundation (News - Alert) Europe, is working to revolutionize telecommunications infrastructure so that it meets the demands of the rapidly evolving industry.

With 5G expanding and 6G on the horizon, Sylva’s focus is on creating a cloud-native, scalable, and energy-efficient Telco Cloud infrastructure to support technologies like Open RAN, edge computing, and AI-driven networks.

Many telecom providers are burdened by outdated hardware and non-cloud-native software. To combat this, Telecom and tech players, including Deutsche Telekom, Red Hat, Orange, Telefónica, Telecom Italia, and Vodafone (News - Alert), are working together as part of Sylva’s governance board to define a reference architecture that addresses challenges like scalability, operational efficiency, and sustainability in telecom networks.

Sylva’s solutions include:

  • Scalability and Energy Efficiency: Optimizing Telco Cloud infrastructure to handle the high demands of 5G and future 6G technologies while improving energy use.
  • Sustainability Tools: Developing metrics and frameworks to measure and minimize the carbon footprint of telecom operations.
  • Advanced Hardware Integration: Leveraging GPUs and DPUs to boost network performance and enable AI-driven management.

Artificial intelligence is also central to Sylva’s vision. The goal is to enhance performance while reducing manual oversight. By integrating AI and small language models, the project hopes to optimize network operations, streamline resource allocation, and enable predictive maintenance.

With edge computing also now becoming more widespread, Sylva is prioritizing environmental sustainability and security. By embedding energy-efficient practices and comprehensive security measures into its cloud-native framework.

Its upcoming v1.2 release promises major upgrades, including better scalability, improved performance for containerized workloads, and advanced tools for cloud-native operations.
