Nokia Strengthens Network Security with GenAI Assistant

By Greg Tavarez February 28, 2024

The XDR market is experiencing significant growth, driven by the rising complexity and frequency of targeted cyberattacks. It is estimated that the market will grow from $1.5 billion in 2023 to $9.3 billion in 2023, according to the “Extended Detection and Response Market” research report.

This rapid expansion underscores the critical need for comprehensive security solutions like Cybersecurity Dome by Nokia.

Nokia (News - Alert)'s Cybersecurity Dome aims to address the increasing need for robust network security in the face of cyber threats. This XDR platform leverages AI and machine learning (ML) to provide communication service providers and enterprises with advanced 5G network defenses.

AI and ML algorithms analyze vast amounts of data to identify subtle anomalies and potential security risks. Automation capabilities powered by AI and ML expedite the response to identified threats, and security teams leverage insights derived from AI and ML to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation and threat prioritization.

Building on those capabilities, Nokia recently integrated its NetGuard Cybersecurity Dome software with a new telco-centric GenAI assistant. This integration aims to provide CSPs and enterprises with faster and more accurate threat detection and resolution capabilities.

The GenAI assistant, commercially available in the second quarter, leverages large language models within Microsoft (News - Alert) Azure OpenAI Service. Trained on insights from 5G network architecture, security practices and Nokia's expertise, the assistant analyzes vast amounts of data related to cyber threats, which enhances Cybersecurity Dome's efficiency in identifying and resolving security incidents.

The training encompasses diverse information sources, including 3GPP and NIST network architecture specifications, 5G network topology details and cybersecurity frameworks like MITRE ATT&CK and FiGHT, or 5G Hierarchy of Threats. The training allows the GenAI assistant to understand the nuances of 5G operations and security. From there it can interpret data and identify potential threats with greater accuracy.

“The combination of Nokia’s telecoms domain and security expertise with Microsoft’s leading generative AI solutions such as Azure OpenAI Service provides enriched and context aware outcomes,” said Fran Heeran (News - Alert), Senior Vice President and General Manager, Product and Engineering, Cloud and Network Services at Nokia. “Combining Nokia’s NetGuard Cybersecurity Dome with the telco-centric GenAI assistant gives communication service providers and enterprises significantly more agility in mitigating destructive cybersecurity attacks on their mission-critical operations.”

Nokia anticipates that the GenAI assistant can shorten the time needed to identify and resolve threats by up to 50%, depending on the attack type. This improvement is also expected to significantly reduce false positives. Several Nokia customers are already lined up to begin testing the GenAI assistant in the coming weeks.
